How To Check & Fix Your WordPress Website Health

by Nikky Dada, 21 Feb 2023

How do you check and fix your WordPress website health? WordPress powers over a quarter of websites globally and is an easy to use Content Management System. It is not difficult to fix and the ability to check the health of your site is one of the embedded tools in your WordPress dashboard. When you’re setting up a new WordPress site or your site has been around for a while, the WordPress Health Check Page is the easiest way to check your site’s health.

Checking your site’s health is easy as a b c

Fixes Usually Required

UPDATE YOUR PHP

Updating your version of PHP helps secure your website and optimise your site speed. You can change your PHP version through “Change PHP Version” in your Hosting Control Panel. To find out how to do this, read my previous post

It is worth noting that although 8.0 is now the recommended version of PHP, and unfortunately not all plugins will be compatible with this. If the plugin is essential to your site, you should check with the plugin developer to see if it will be upgraded. Otherwise, delete the plugin and look for another that will do the same functions

INSTALL AN SSL CERTIFICATE TO ENABLE HTTPS

Most hosting services come with a free Secure Socket Layer capability that gives an extra layer of validation on your website. Having your users connect to your site through HTTPS  helps to keep your site secure. If you have one of our Hosting packages or Managed WordPress packages,  you’ll already have access to free SSL certificates through Let’s Encrypt. You can activate these certificates through  “SSL/TLS” in your Hosting Control Panel.

Once you’ve installed your SSL certificate, the warning will still be there. You will also need to use a plugin such as Really Simple SSL or Better Search Replace to make all the connections to your site secure and fix the warning.

CONFIGURE AND OPTIMISE PHP

Apart from updating your PHP, you need to configure the PHP for your website. Everything runs on PHP in WordPress so updating it to the right size will enable smooth running of the website. This includes uploading speed. This could be daunting to set up but it is necessary.

DELETE UNUSED THEMES

WordPress comes with several themes by default. It is advised that you delete them if unused as their being available will consume resources and impact your website negatively
